{FIRST DAYS OF SCHOOL & OUR 'STUDY TIME' IS BACK IN FULL EFFECT...}
we are onto week SIX of our newest ‘school’ year and when I say its coming along… it’s coming along. there’s been so many ups/downs, scaling things back and adding things on that this free spirited unschool mom is taking 2 hours breaks ‘after school’ every-single-day because sis… I need it!!! many of our goals and targets have a lot less to do with the love of knowledge/learning and a whole lot more to do with the attributes that will help them to achieve their goals and succeed at what they set their hearts and minds to in the first place. things like time management, prioritizing, communication, test taking skills, focus and deep work. all the stuff I hate… real talk.
there’s been a lot of ‘why’ this and ‘how much longer’ that. and, it makes me soooooo frustrated inside. I just want to throw all of the workbooks, worksheets and assignments out the window and head for the hills. AGAIN…REAL TALK!
we’ve spent all of our earlier years exploring and discovering without real timelines or pressures involved and I love that for us. but, I always knew that there would come a time when the gears would have to shift and we’d need to start creating more boundaries, implementing more rigid structure and developing more disciplines that will serve us along the way. while their focus is on the heart of their studies, I decided that my focus needed to be on documenting a little differently in these next seasons of unschool & life.
were still fitting in little adventures here and there. so far we’ve been chipping away at cameron’s bookstore tour gap year goal and we look forward to these to break up the monotony of our days full of studying. my heart is longing for the 3rd/4th quarter of this year when the adventures will make up the whole of our days, lol!
^^ ‘forgotten founders’ found this little gem at a local bookstore. ^^
we do everything as a team. so, while it is strange to consider us at each of our individual stages, working on the same things all at once… it just works so well this way. some of us focus better than others at any given time, and when this is the case we have each other to cheer us on.
^^ night games are my favorite ^^
while ‘study time’ fills our days, sports and activities make up our nights! cameron and savannah have full basketball and soccer seasons on the books and Kendall and I have been exploring the best ways for us to establish language, cooking and coding studies in the afternoon/evening hours.
^^ Kendall’s first cooking class in the city at Hudson Table Philadelphia ^^
i’m just getting used to assigning work and “grading” papers but our bookish method of living and learning is still very much so the same. we have literature selections, history book picks, science, math and geography books that we use as resources and share with one another along the way.
I started to film a bit on our first official ‘back to school’ day of the year and shared a bit about our morning meeting before I tucked the camera away and committed the rest of our first day back to memory.
thank you for supporting what we share by following along, purchasing from our shop and sharing with those who you think will enjoy or be encouraged along the way.
with all the love,
syreena
